How to check it: Use a precision square or laser alignment tool to verify that both the head and tail pulleys are perpendicular to the conveyor centerline and parallel to each other. Measure from the frame to each end of the pulley shaft. Any discrepancy greater than 1–2 mm across the width of the belt warrants adjustment. Loosen the bearing take-up bolts and shift the pulley incrementally — always make small adjustments and run the belt briefly between each change.

Even if your pulleys are perfectly aligned, a frame that's twisted, racked, or not level will cause the belt to track off. Conveyors installed on uneven floors, or that have shifted over time due to vibration or settling, are especially prone to this.

Culprit #4: Idler Misalignment

Carry idlers and return idlers that are not perpendicular to the belt's direction of travel will steer the belt off course — similar to how a misaligned wheel pulls a vehicle to one side. This is often the result of improper installation, impact damage, or idlers that have shifted in their mounting brackets over time.

How to check it: Walk the full length of the conveyor and visually inspect each idler. Look for any that appear cocked or angled relative to the frame. Use a tape measure to confirm that each idler is centered and square. Troughing idlers should be checked for equal wing angles on both sides. If you find a misaligned idler, re-square it to the frame before making any other adjustments. Note: some conveyors use intentionally angled "training idlers" to correct drift — these should only be installed after other causes have been ruled out.

Sometimes the belt itself is the problem. A damaged edge, a poorly made splice, or uneven tension across the belt width can all cause consistent drift in one direction. Splices that are not square to the belt centerline are a particularly common culprit in field-spliced belts.

How to check it: Run the belt slowly and watch the splice as it passes over the head pulley. If the belt walks to one side each time the splice passes, the splice is likely the issue. Inspect the belt edges for cuts, fraying, or delamination that could affect how the belt seats on the idlers. Check take-up tension — if a screw take-up is used, ensure both sides are tensioned equally. Uneven tension will cause the belt to migrate toward the tighter side.

A Systematic Approach Saves Time

The biggest mistake technicians make when diagnosing tracking problems is jumping straight to adjusting training idlers or the tail pulley without first ruling out structural and cleanliness issues. Follow this sequence:

  1. Level and square the frame
  2. Align head and tail pulleys

Only after completing these steps should you consider using training idlers as a fine-tuning measure. Adjusting idlers to compensate for a structural or alignment problem will create new issues downstream.
